What is the Restoring Truth Model training?

The Restoring Truth Model (RTM) is a professional training for therapists, coaches and advocates who guide couples through Full Disclosure after sexual betrayal. It is partner betrayal trauma-sensitive, polyvagal-informed, and relationship-nurturing.

The training teaches more than the steps of the disclosure process. It teaches why each step is done the way it is. It is highly experiential and uses the companion Full Disclosure books, one for the disclosing partner and one for the betrayed partner. Take it on its own, or count it toward certification as a Certified Clinical Disclosure Guide or Certified Disclosure Guide Coach.

Restoring Truth Model: Disclosure Guide Professional Training

For therapists, coaches and advocatesRegistration closed

Who may attend: this is a professional training for people who help others through Full Disclosure after sexual betrayal. It is open to:

  • licensed therapists and other clinicians;
  • coaches who have completed a coaching certification program;
  • people who currently support those affected by sex addiction or betrayal, such as mentors, ministry professionals and group facilitators.

It is not a recovery program. If you are facing a disclosure in your own relationship, a Disclosure Guide can walk you and your partner through it.

Three days of teaching and practice in the Restoring Truth Model: how to prepare the disclosing partner, support the betrayed partner, and guide the disclosure itself in a way that does not retraumatize the betrayed partner and gives the relationship a truthful foundation to rebuild on.

How dare the addiction make me feel less than I am? Deprive me of my humanity. How dare it to rob me of my ability to concentrate and focus on making even simple decisions for months. How dare it make me feel not pretty enough? Thin enough, young enough, smart enough, not enough. You sold me a package of lies. And because I believed them, I willingly made sacrifices. I'm just ashamed. I'm a little frustrated too. You know that you can return to your heart breath anytime distress comes up and blocks you away from holding up your partner's heart.

You put a lot of time and effort and work into it. So just know today, no more waiting. You look on the next page on 218 in the book, rationalizing, justifying, minimizing blame. You had a number of things in here that shifted blame. You move around until you find that you were sitting at your center like you can feel it. Commit to rebuilding us. I commit to rebuilding our family. I have used words to lie, minimize, gaslight, rationalize, and blame shift my behaviors. So I acknowledge that the words in this letter need to be followed up with my actions.

What you learn

The training covers both the model and the reasons behind it, so you can adapt it to each couple rather than follow a script.

The model

  • The stages of a Full Disclosure, from preparation to the days after
  • Preparing the disclosing partner to tell the whole truth, accurately and without needless graphic detail
  • Supporting the betrayed partner as she prepares her questions, boundaries, and safety needs
  • Coordinating with the other professionals on the case

The trauma-healing foundation

  • Partner betrayal trauma, and why a rushed disclosure can retraumatize
  • Polyvagal theory applied to the disclosure meeting
  • How the process protects the relationship, whatever the couple decides
  • Experiential practice of the skills in each stage

Certification and listing

You can take the training on its own. If you meet the certification criteria (opens in a new tab), it also counts toward certification as a Certified Clinical Disclosure Guide (therapists), Certified Disclosure Guide Coach (coaches) or Restoring Truth Disclosure Advocate (people who currently support those affected by sex addiction or betrayal).

When you finish the training, you can list yourself in the Find a Disclosure Guide directory. That's where clients go looking for guides trained in the Restoring Truth Model.

The companion books

The model uses the disclosure preparation in the Full Disclosure books, one for each partner:

Bring both books to the training. They are bought separately.

Common questions

Do I need to be licensed to take the training?

Not necessarily, but the training is for people who work with others in this area: licensed clinicians, certified coaches, and people who currently support those affected by sex addiction or betrayal. Each group has its own certification track: Certified Clinical Disclosure Guide, Certified Disclosure Guide Coach and Restoring Truth Disclosure Advocate. Completing this training is the first step on each one. See the certification requirements (opens in a new tab).

I'm going through a disclosure myself. Is this training for me?

This training prepares professionals to guide other couples. For help with a disclosure in your own relationship, see working with a Disclosure Guide. If you are in recovery and also support others, for example as a sponsor or group facilitator, you're welcome to attend.

Does the training certify me?

Not on its own. Think of it as a step toward certification for those who meet the criteria set by Kintsugi Recovery Partners (opens in a new tab).

Will there be other dates?

Yes. The training runs once or twice a year. If the next dates don't work for you, let us know and ask to hear when new ones are set.

Can I get consultation on a disclosure case after the training?

Yes. Dr. Caudill offers case consultation and supervision for professionals. See consultation and supervision.

Questions about the training?

We're glad to talk with you about dates, cost, certification, or whether the training fits your practice.

More for professionals
